ARC Review : Breaking Nova (Nova #1) By Jessica Sorensen

Summary :

Nova Reed used to have dreams-of becoming a famous drummer, of marrying her true love. But all of that was taken away in an instant. Now she's getting by as best she can, though sometimes that means doing things the old Nova would never do. Things that are slowly eating away at her spirit. Every day blends into the next . . . until she meets Quinton Carter. His intense, honey brown eyes instantly draw her in, and he looks just about as broken as she feels inside.

Quinton once got a second chance at life-but he doesn't want it. The tattoos on his chest are a constant reminder of what he's done, what he's lost. He's sworn to never allow happiness into his life . . . but then beautiful, sweet Nova makes him smile. He knows he's too damaged to get close to her, yet she's the only one who can make him feel alive again. Quinton will have to decide: does he deserve to start over? Or should he pay for his past forever?

Review :
**Received Through NetGalley**

“And then just like that, everything that once existed, lives, breaths, heartbeats, were gone. And I was left with blood on my hands.”

I always love fast-paced books, so yes, that was one thing I liked about this book. Even at times, it felt a little repetitive, it was still a page-turner. Besides, I liked the suspense. It kept me engaged with the story and the characters.
Nova has “dealt” with her grief by immersing herself in collage and her photography/film class. She lives day by day in a robotic way. The only way she knows how to cope without dealing with what happened to Landon. Yet Landon and what happened is always there, teasing and taunting her. Wrapping her up with questions of Why? How? What if? One of the things that torments Nova, is the why it happened? Why did he do it? Nova does not remember per say the exact details of that night. That changed her life forever, and a big part of her really doesn’t want to remember. Landon was huge part of Novas life, and the lack of understanding him after everything that happened and how “close” they were supposed to be in a part is crippling for her. What do you do when the life you knew no longer is the same?

“I’m pretty certain my worthless heart shatters inside my chest, and she steals one of the pieces. If it didn’t already belong to someone else I probably would have handed her all the pieces right then and there.”

Quinton, is in a similar situation as Nova. He too suffered a terrible loss(s), and his world and future plans are as well tarnished with the events of a devastating night.Quinton loses not only his girlfriend but his cousin. Quinton has a lot of guilt hammering at him, therefore he doesn’t cope well with it. It just took one drag to become dependant in the search of that oblivion numbness.
The sadness that radiates from both is an unmistakable and bonds both characters in a forceful way. Yet not everything and every paring is healthy and that’s when we see all characters involved nose dive taking the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions.Breaking Nova is a book that touches various subjects. Deep dark subjects.
As dark as everything sounds, I beg to differ that this is a depressing novel. Instead, its enlightening aspect outshines the gloom, throwing the psyche of 2 very dark minds into perspective. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel.
